Reconnaissance

He forced open a slat and endured another ray of hope.
And he clicked his heels two times,
But fell flat on his face,
So close to that cigar
He could taste the sweet smoke.

The number you never gave him
A reconnaissance born--
A frantic call to an operator:
The last name you never told him meant
A search aborted.
Inconsequential, given an unheard voicemail's worth.

(More than he means to you).

He will not accept that;
You were once
So close he painted a portrait
Of the aroma on your skin:
A war zone,
Snowed in

By the dust
Of many a kamikaze suitor.
A hunting ground
Reversed:
The target holds
The ammunition.
