My response to some idiot on a myspace message board:

Some hippy-ass idiot posted:

It is great and all that eveyone has a comment to morn the death of our brothers, but maybe instead of being sympathetic/apethetic towards the issue people should be thinking about how they can make a difference in this community. Instead of fighting among ourselves, since you know thats what we do, self-respecting individuals should put forth the effort to make sure that this type of situation does not arise in the future. It is not bad to morn the death of these two victims, but it is better to join together as a community to express our losses and rally for the right cause. God bless the subjects of these heinous acts against humanity, but God speed to everyone who is attempting to make this world a better place.

I responded:

See, that's a perspective that's a bit Utopian for me...

I am SURE I am going to get flamed to no end for saying this, but there are many instances in any given gay function that I understand EXACTLY why homophobia exists.

And it has NOTHING to do with straight people!

If we are to truly unite as a community, then we really need to completely redo the social fabric of it, by which I mean like completely redefine what it means to be Gay. Because from what I can tell, you know, just like knowing hundreds of Gay people, being Gay means that you whore yourself around, do lots of drugs, go out at least two or three times a week but conduct yourself snobbily like you're someone just because of how good you THINK you look or you have some website and ONLY associate with the people in your clique, oh yeah, and walk around like you know how to dress just because you had the inkling to pick up a bunch of clothing from some name brand, which to me says drama, competition, and division, not unity or any of that.

Those may sound like stereotypes, but if there is ANY social group that proves why stereotypes exist, it's Gay men.

Just my $.02, of course....

ah, but whatabout the hidden folk? the invisible gays who watch football or hey are quite obvious but don't bring it up? if we don't show up in the club, how can we possibly counter any stereotype? it's important to also look at which gay people are being harassed and why they are. when i read general comments by politicians or other people that are negative towards what they think gay is as a whole, i've found it quite simple to just reassure myself that that's not me they are talking about and in fact that they have no idea what they are talking about. but that's talking, doing is different.

i really think that love and intelligence go hand in had. hate crimes could just as easily be called dumb crimes, and people who operate by their anger rather than listening to it are just fools.

i felt insulted when i visited a gym and the guys were annoyed at how clumsy i was with the equipment, how silly i am, and basically anything else they decided not to like. it bugged me and yeah i'd rather go to a different gym. my roommate tends to like to do everything gay has to checkout the citiy's gay sceneetc. but i'm not interested. i'd rather meet people who are really different - the beatnik queers into magic the gathering or whatever the hell. hot guys are great but you better flirt.

but try this: next time you see a guy on the street all insecure like that (aka snotty), smile and say hi. i betcha he be humble about it and it will make him happy. :)
